Barbecue cook-off draws expert cooks, thousands of hungry patrons


FARMINGTON — The smell of fresh barbecue wafted all the way to U.S. 64 during the 11th annual cook-off Saturday evening at the San Juan County Fair.
There were 18 entrees in the contest, mostly consisting of bands of employees from local businesses. Awards were given in categories of best beef, pork butt, pork loin, booth decorations, side dish and people's choice.
Though it was a competition, the participants hardly noticed.
"We don't care who wins, we're just having a good time," said Nick Sherman, a Chevron employee.
The Chevron booth won best beef in 2007, but another employee, Antonio Lucero, remained humble and uncertain of a repeat performance.
"There's quite a few good cooks out here," Lucero said.
"And it's for a good cause," Sherman added.
The proceeds from the tickets, which were $8 for adults and $5 for children, went to scholarships through 4-H and Future Farmers of America, said Kelly Echols, the cook-off organizer. Some of the money also was dispersed to local charities.
